A Reddit post showing a sheepdog's dramatic transformation after a trip to their grooming salon has amused internet users online who could not get enough of the before-and-after images.
Posted on April 1 on the subreddit r/mildlyinteresting by the dog's owner as u/take_off_the_foo-foo, the side-by-side collage features two photos of the same pet. In the first, the sheepdog appears engulfed by a thick coat of long white fur, his face nearly obscured by the shaggy mass. In the second, the dog looks almost unrecognizable with a closely clipped coat, his features now fully visible.
The post was captioned: "Sheepdog before and after a lil haircut." Since it was shared online, it has garnered more than 44,000 upvotes on Reddit, quickly gaining traction across the platform and sparking plenty of lighthearted comments from amused viewers.
"Before: sheep … After: dog," one viewer said. Another added: "Dog in sheep's clothing."
"This is the first time in human existence that we get to see what a sheepdog looks like underneath its fur," a third viewer posted. "We should all be blessed to have experienced this."
"Unlike almost everyone here I think the right looks way better than the left," another comment read. "Imagine how much lighter it feels."
Other users, with some claiming to be professional dog groomers, had more thoughtful observations on the transformation.
"I'm a dog groomer and I'm about to be the 'um, actually' downer with my specialized knowledge," one user posted. "This dog was in all likelihood matted to hell and there was no other option than to shave it down.
"Matted hair is dirty, painful, smelly, and can harbor things like fleas and mold … Shaving does not harm this coat type. It's like shaving a human's hair. It will grow back just the same."
This user added that, to their knowledge, this kind of overgrown coat is common among busy dog owners who cannot keep track of their pet's grooming and maintenance needs. The user urged owners to make time for their pets to have regular haircuts.
"If you have a dog with a long coat, be sure to educate yourself on how to care for them properly," they continued.
"Yup! Brush your dogs," another viewer added.
